One of the main tasks of the Cyprus Press and Information Office (PIO) is to inform the Cypriot public about the government work and this is done through the daily issuing of press releases which are distributed to the Press and to other recipients (embassies, Press offices, news agencies, etc). These press releases are then bound in volumes and maintained for archive purposes. Since 2003 the press releases are posted daily on the PIO Cyprus website. The PIO press releases archive, dating back to 1959, constitutes a significant source of information for the public and especially for researchers, students and journalists. Up until recently the archive could be accessed only by those who visited the PIO premises.
The Cyprus Press and Information Office, fully aware of the pressing need to harmonise and keep up-to-date with new technologies, has recently decided to begin digitising its archive and to render it accessible to the wider public through this website. In this way it is no longer necessary to visit our premises in order to look through the archive but rather just sit comfortably at home or at work and browse through milestones of Cypriot contemporary history. The digitised archive contained on this website covers the period 2/1/1962 – 30/6/1972.
